'THE GREAT WAR',     'THE WAR TO END WAR',     'WORLD WAR 1'
'What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
- Only the monstrous anger of the guns.'

from 'Anthem for Doomed Youth' by Wilfred Owen

The Memorial Tablet in the Institute, commemorating the men who died in the Great War
St. Paul's Methodist Church, Shaw.

The Memorial Tablet in the Institute, commemorating the men who served in the Great War - St. Paul's Methodist Church, Shaw.

After the War, St Paul's raised the funds to build an Institute in memory of the servicemen who had served and died. It was opened in 1925 and the event was reported in the Oldham Chronicle, under the heading, 'Dream Comes True in Shaw'. We can read that it took 6 years to raise the necessary £7,000 pounds to erect and furnish it. The Institute accommodated a kitchen, library, general reading room, billiards room and gymnasium. The opening ceremony was performed by a former minister of the church and attracted a large crowd.

Over the 6 years it took to raise the money, one of the fund-raising events was the 'Memorial & Thanksgiving Bazaar' held in February 1920, in the Wesleyan Schools. One of the fund raising activities at this bazaar was an 'Autograph Book' in which, in return for a donation, could be written the names, stories and memories of servicemen. The dedication inside it reads,

"This book is a Souvenir of the Memorial and Thanksgiving Bazaar held at the Shaw Wesleyan Schools, Feb. 1920, and is dedicated with sincere Thanks and Appreciation to all whose names appear on its pages.

They left the life their youth had known,
They plumbed the soundless depths of hell,
For all the world had hope alone
In men that fought , and men that fell.
Mary Warner

Collected by Mrs. Norman Halliwell, and sold in aid of the Flower Stall."

There are dozens of names and memories ... some sad, some humorous, and some just thankful to have survived.

The original album is in the care of the church, in Shaw, but my thanks go to Gillian Ashworth who has allowed me to use her printed copy, scan it, and include it on this website.

The Servicemen whose names are found on the pages have a link, which will take you to a page showing a larger picture and / or more information.
