Family of John Fish

Private John Fish, was the son of Sarah Jane and John Fish, born in 1889 (in the first quarter).

On the 1901 census he is shown as a 3 year old child with a younger brother Walter F. and 2 older half-brothers.

His father was born in Sheffield and his mother in Bolton, whilst he and his brothers were all born in Failsworth.

In 1901 the family was living in Failsworth at 1, Nelson Street. His father worked as 'a Colliery road repairer; below ground.'
His elder half-brother, George, age 16, also worked at the colliery, as a pit brow hand.

On the 1911 census his mother, Sarah Jane is shown as widowed, and now living in Droylsden with her 4 young sons, Harry age 13, John age 12, Leonard age 9, and Fred age 6.
With them is her older son, Robert Harrison age 19 and a widowed boarder, Alice Pike.

Private John Fish, 54699 Manchester Regiment 16th Bn.
Died of wounds on the 1st April, 1918 and is buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery (on the outskirts of Boulogne).
He was remembered by his mother, now re-married, living at 3, Victoria Street, Failsworth
