CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTION IN WW1

William Nicholas Scaddon

Chadderton Tribunal 7 July 1916
Reported Oldham Chronicle 8 July 1916

At Chadderton Tribunal yesterday William N Scaddon (38) a married master baker, of 147 Drury-lane , Hollinwood. Appealed for exemption on the ground that he was a Wesleyan and had been engaged on Christian work for the last 20 years and he found it impossible to engage in military service. He had contributed to the evangelisation of the world and his idea was to save life not destroy it. He also put in a business claim and said his wife and three children were dependent upon him.

Replying to further questions he said he was willing to put his business claim forward if, on a future occasion, he could state his conscientious objection.

Eventually he was granted exemption on trade grounds.
