CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTION IN WW1

David Casson

Oldham Tribunal 8 March 1916
Reported Oldham Chronicle 9 March 1916

More claims for exemption from service on the grounds of a conscientious objection against war service were heard before the Oldham Tribunal on Wednesday ….

…. David Casson of 65 Napier-street East, a painter, said that he did not want to go into the Army at all, combatant or non-combatant. He belongs to the United Methodist Church.

Alderman Hirst: How long have you held these views?
- Since the beginning of the war. I did not know anything about war before - never bothered about war.

Alderman Hirst: You had not considered the question at all?
- No sir.

He was put in the non-combatant service.
