CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTION IN WW1

Aged 28 years,
C1 [classification] married, employed at Oak Mill Hollinwood.
He said he had a conscientious objection to military service.
Member of Henshaw Street Primitive Methodist Church.
He had applied to be naval sick berth attendant. He had received letter telling him to go to Portsmouth and report for duty.
Case adjourned 2 weeks for him to report back.

Since he was last before the Tribunal he had been to Portsmouth to try to enlist in the Naval Sick Berth Reserve but was told by naval doctors that he was no use for any form of service.
Ordered for non-combatant service, tribunal cannot guarantee RAMC.

[Note: In 1939 CO Matthew Bailey, single, (see his enry) was living with William and Lily. The two men were living in neighbouring streets at the 1911 census and were 9 months apart in age. Matthew did WNI at Woodfield, did ... they both work there?]
