CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTION IN WW1

Arthur Smith

Oldham Tribunal 8 March 1916
Reported Oldham Chronicle 9 March 1916

More claims for exemption from service on the grounds of a conscientious objection against war service were heard before the Oldham Tribunal on Wednesday ….

…. Arthur Smith of 11 Glodwick, a roller coverer, said that he had been a member of the Boys' Life Saving Brigade for four years.

He was quite willing to enter for non-combatant service.

His employer was with him and wished to claim exemption for him on the ground of his value at work but as the employer had not sent in an appeal, he had no standing.

Smith was put in the non-combatant section.
