Newspaper obituary:

"Mrs. Chadwick, wife of Sergeant Walter A. Chadwick, has received word that her husband was killed in action on July 1st. He enlisted in one of the Manchester City Battalions at Oldham Wakes, 1914. He was 27 years of age and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Chadwick, of 285, Oldham-road, Failsworth, and was well known in the district. He was formally employed as a costs clerk by Glover and Co. Ltd., Trafford Park, where he had worked for nine years. He attended All Saints' Church and school, Newton Heath. He leaves a young widow, having been married 15 months.
Second-lieutenant Tidy wrote to the widow:

You will, no doubt have heard by now of the death of your husband in action on July 1st. I should like to express my deepest sympathy with you in your great loss. It must be some consolation to know that your husband died fighting for his country. He is reported as died from wounds but you can rest assured he did not suffer at all. I saw him personally just after he was hit and he was quite unconscious and died a short time after, without regaining consciousness. He is a great loss to company. I shall miss him very much. He was also a hard worker and was much looked up to."
