Newspaper obituary:

"Mrs Clough of 17 Radcliffe Street, Springhead, has received the following letter announcing the death of her son, Private John Clough, Manchester regiment, from Private Dearner, of Private Clough's platoon:-

Dear Mrs Clough, - I am sorry to have to write to you about your son Jack. He was killed in action on July 1st. He gave me your address before we went in action, and asked me to write to you if anything happened to him. He has been my pal all the way through, and he was liked by everybody in the company so well. Will you accept my deepest sympathy? He never suffered any pain. He was killed by a shell. I am very much upset about it.

Private Clough was 34 years of age and worked before he enlisted at the Greenfield Mill. He was a widower with no children, and lived with his mother at 17 Radcliffee Street, Springhead."
