Newspaper obituary:

"Rifleman William Glossop, King's Royal Rifles, was killed in action on June 26th. He is a son of Mrs Glossop of 2, Bancroft Street, a mere youth of 17, but with a sense of his duty which caused him to join the colours in September of last year, and he was drafted out to the front shortly after Christmas. Glossop has been killed in the recent fighting, and a letter from his company sergeant-major conveying the sad news to his family is in the following terms:-

It is with the greatest regret that I write to inform you of your son's death, which occurred last night during a rather severe bombardment. Of what I knew of your son during the time he was in my company I always found him a willing soldier, who was well liked amongst his platoon. He was on sentry duty at the time he was killed, and I can assure you he did not suffer any pain as he was killed instantly. He will be buried in the brigade burial ground, which is in a place well behind the fighting line and is well looked after. I can only express my sympathy to you in this great trouble, but he died doing his duty for his country for which you can be thankful. Hoping you bear this with calmness, as you women at home are mostly doing."

Before enlisting, Glossop worked as a piecer at West End Mills, Oldham "
