Newspaper obituary:

"Lance-Cpl. Edward H. Holme, who was in one of the Manchester Pals' battalions, was killed in action on July 1st. His home was at 38 Plane-street, Oldham, and he was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. I. Holme. Twenty-eight years of age he enlisted in November, 1914, when employed in the accountant's department at the British Westinghouse Co.'s works, Trafford Park. A comrade has written to Lance-Cpl. Home's parents a letter in which he says that the lance-corporal was picked up close to the German trenches.

A letter received by Holme's married sister, from the Quartermaster-sergeant of his company, is as follows:

It is with deep regret that I have to make my acquaintance in this manner, and it is a painful duty to have to pen the words that your dear brother Eddie was killed in action on the 1st of July during the great advance of our regiment. I know it will be a small consolation to you to know that Eddie died a noble death, doing his duty to God and his country. He was close to the German trenches when picked up, and judged by his appearance he passed away quite peacefully. I have been in close touch with him ever since the battalion was formed: in fact, we have worked together practically the whole period. He was my clerk, and I always found him a good and honourable gentleman; assiduous in all his duties and kind-hearted. He was loved by myself and all his comrades and officers. He was a splendid soldier, and England could not afford to part with many like him. I pray to God that He may comfort you in your sad loss, and I trust he will answer my prayer."
