Newspaper obituary:

"Mrs Quarmby, of 470, Manchester-road, Royton, received official notification from the Records Office at Preston on Tuesday morning, that her husband Private Joseph Quarmby (22212), Loyal North Lancaster Regiment, had been killed in action on July 1st.

Private Quarmby was 27 years of age and was well known in both Crompton and Royton. He enlisted in the 1/10 Manchester Regiment in August, 1914, and was afterwards transferred to the Loyal North Lancaster Regiment. He had been in the trenches 15 months and had been in several engagements. Before the war he was employed as a spinner at the Lion Mill."
