Newspaper obituary:

"Mrs. Wilson, 6. Beatrice-street, off Lees-road, Oldham, has received word of the death in action of her son, Private James Wilson, Machine Gun Corps. The information is contained in the following letter from Private Wilson's section commander:-

Dear Mrs. Wilson, - It is with the deepest regret that I have to inform you of the death in action of your son James of the 7th inst. He was struck by a shell and killed instantly while at his gun. He was a soldier in whom I had the greatest confidence, and his section and myself feel the loss very keenly.

He had just previously performed an act of great gallantry in bringing back his gun and taking his tripod from an advanced position under very heavy shell fire.

Kindly accept the heartfelt sympathy of all his comrades and the officers of the company.

Private Wilson was a single man of 24 years of age. Before the war he was employed as a conductor on the Oldham Corporation Tramways. He enlisted after the outbreak of the war in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and was later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps."
