Newspaper obituary:

"The friends of Private Sidney Crawshaw, Royal Fusiliers, have been informed of his death in action. His captain, S. Frazer Dobie, says:

He was killed in action; his body was found well on the way to victory, and he died amongst the craters and trenches he so nobly helped to win.

Private Crawshaw, whose parents reside in Brazil and who was the grandson of Mr James Whitehead, sometime Borough Accountant of Oldham, before enlisting, resided at 173 Lee Street. He joined the Royal Scots in September 1914, and left for France in December 1915. He was 20 years of age and was employed in the manager's office of the Oldham tramways. He was a keen player of games and was an active member of Oldham Lacrosse Club, and also a member of Werneth Cricket Club."
