Manchester Regiment 2nd Bn

Newspaper obituary:

"Private W. Hilton, of the Manchester Regiment, has been
killed in action early this month, the date not being given. Hilton was 21 years of age, and joined the Army in September 1914. He had been at the front some considerable time and twelve months ago had his middle finger shot off, but he was able to return to the fighting line in December.

A letter from Sergeant T. Davies, of Hilton's Platoon, dated July 19th, states:

Dear Mrs Hilton, - I am very sorry to inform you of your brave boy's death, and I and his comrades offer you their deepest sympathy. It was a shock to the platoon when they all got to know that he had gone to his Maker. We have all lost a chum, and there was not a braver lad out here. Had he only had the luck to pull through, I am sure he would have got decorated for gallantry. I would have let you know sooner only we have not had the chance. I now close, hoping that you keep up a stout heart and don't let your sorrow make you ill.

Private Hilton's parents reside at 1 Wilfred Street, Oldham."
