"Private Wilfred Smithies, of the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, was killed in action on July 1st 1916. He was 21 years of age, and his parents reside at 14 Howard Street, Waterhead. He joined the army in February 1914, prior to which he was a piecer at the Orb Mill."
