Newspaper obituary:

"The parents of Private Harold C. Stockdale, one of the Public Schools Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers, who reside at Osborne Villa, Osborne Road, Oldham, have been informed of his death in action. A comrade, Private Charles Garfitt, who before enlisting was employed at the Union Bank, Oldham, has written to Mr Stockdale stating this his son was killed whilst fixing his machine gun on July 20th. Private Stockdale enlisted in September 1914, and had been in the firing line eight months. He was 22 years of age, and before joining was traveller for his father, Mr L Stockdale, tea and coffee merchant of Wellington Street. He was a keen player of games, and had been connected with Werneth lacrosse Club. He was educated at Oldham Grammar School. "
