Canadian Expeditionary Force

Newspaper obituary:

"Private James Cahill (467260), of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, who lived with his aunt, Mrs Considine, at 28 Horsedge Street, Oldham, before going to Canada eight years ago, has fallen in action.

A short time ago his aunt had a letter addressed to him returned and she wrote to the officer commanding the battalion. She received on Thursday morning the following letter:

Your letter of recent date has been forwarded to me as commander of the late A company. I regret to have to tell you that is quite true that Private J. Cahill was killed in action. I knew him well. He was in my own platoon. I have forwarded you letter to the – Battalion, to which he was transferred with the request that they should write and give you all possible details. I know he will have done his duty as he always did and proved that he was a credit to his country and his calling. Yours truly, P. B. Barrett (Captain).

Prior to going to Canada Private Cahill, who is 33 years of age, worked as a clerk at the National telephone Company's Offices in Oldham."
