2nd Battalion. Grenadier Guards

Newspaper obituary:

"Private John Boardman, Grenadier Guards, of 221 Ashton Road West, Failsworth, was killed in France on July 12th. Private Boardman was 47 years of age and leaves a widow and family. He enlisted in September 1914. He was wounded in France in June 1915, and was invalided home, returning to active service in October. Before the war he was employed by Messrs Ferranti Ltd. Private Boardman was well known in football and bowling circles, having played football with Oldham Rugby Club before the days of the Northern Union. Not a big man, he was a sterling forward, and retained his love for the game to such an extent that he turned up last season and offered to play for the club after many years absence. As a bowler he was well known among the Blackpool sweep bowlers, and in 1897 he won the Cawley Cup at Failsworth Liberal Club

The news of his death was contained in a letter from the officer of the machine-gun company of the battalion."
