2nd Battalion, Manchester Regiment

Newspaper obituary:

"Lance Corporal James Lester, Manchester Regiment, was killed in action on July 1st. His home was at 14 Egyptian Street, Salem, and he had been in the army since August 8th 1914, having been 17 months in France, and passing scatheless until the day he met his death. He was in Oldham on six days' leave three months ago. Twenty-eight years of age, he leaves a widow and three children. He was a moulder at Platt's old works. First intimation of his death was received by a friend who had addressed a parcel to him. To this Lady Sergeant Boyd wrote stating that Lester was killed on the 1st July, and asking her to break the news to his wife. He added: 'Most of his comrades knew him for over twelve months. He was always very lively and cheerful up to the day of going into action. He died a soldier's death….If sympathy counts, I and his comrades give the very deepest to his wife and children in their bereavement'

Official intimation of the death has been received since."
