            Recruiting in Oldham (excerpt)
             There has been a lull in the recruiting in Oldham during the week and the figures are certainly not creditable to a town of this size. Roughly speaking about 1900 recruits have been obtained at the Oldham and District recruiting stations for Lord Kitchener's Army and 400 for the Oldham Battalion of the Territorials. On the face these appear to be satisfactory figures but they are nothing compared with the results obtained in other towns with a smaller population. Oldham still has a chance to show that she is not apathetic to the needs of the nation at this critical period, for Major Shiers has received a telegram that the Manchester Regiment is forming another battalion at Ashton and 1500 men are wanted .....
