The Old Grammar School, Oldham in 1830

In 1606, James Ashton of Chadderton gave half an acre of land for a school to be built. It was for the purpose of, "... teaching children the English, Latin and Greek tongues, and instructing them in good manners." The school was finally built in 1611 and the first schoolmaster was the incumbent of the Parish Church, the Rev. Thomas Hunt.
