the town and vicinity. Mr. Thomas Tetlow, who erected Werneth mill, was the son of Mr. Edmund Tetlow, once a farmer in Bent, and afterwards, as early as 1810, in the cotton trade at Shaw factory. In 1832 the late Mr. Daniel Dronsfield, uncle of the present proprietors, formerly of Moor side mill, Sholver, became this principal occupier, and ultimately the possessor of' this manufactory. In June, 1833, Mr. Dronsfield employed 177 hands in spinning, and 92 in weaving; but in 1846 he employed about 270 in the former, and 200 in the latter, and the aggregate number of his mule spindles was 33,000. The late Mr. John Tattersall, who erected Lyon mill, was a native of Middleton, and commenced business originally in Fog lane new mill in 1815. In June, 1833, he employed 116 hands in spinning, and 188 in weaving. In 1846, when the manufactory had become the property of Mr. William Tattersall (son of John Tattersall, Esq.) and Mr. Jonathan Mellor, jun., the entire number of hands employed was 430, the number of power-looms 475, and of mule spindles 23,000. Mr. Thomas Cussons, who commenced business at Church lane mill prior to 1815, erected Priory mill, in partnership with Messrs. Bradley and Wilde. In 1831, or previous, Messrs. James Wilde and Co. were possessed of that manufactory; and about 1835 Messrs. John Worthington and Sons, relatives of Mr. Wild, became the proprietors. In 1846, Messrs. Worthingtons, who have since established a second extensive manufactory at Hollinwood, employed 300 hands, and possessed 273 power-looms. Mr. Samuel Radcliffe, who erected Lower house mill, and commenced the cotton business at Acre mill, in 1814, was brother of Messrs. Joshua and Joseph Radcliffe, of High Crompton, manufacturers, afterwards of Richard street mills, Rochdale. Subsequently Mr. Radcliffe, occupied a portion of Vineyard mill. For several years he let the greater part of Lower house mill to different tenants, but about 1830 he occupied almost the entire mill, and shortly afterwards enlarged the manufactory to a considerable extent.
