quantities of clothing, provided by subscription, &c., were distributed to the destitute poor in all townships of the parish. The strike of the spinners did not terminate till the 29th of January, 1827, when the turnouts resumed their employment at the reduced prices, after a useless contest of nearly four months duration. On the 22nd of May, 1827, the refractory turnouts to the number of twenty-six, appeared as directed, in the Court of King's Bench, when they all received sentences of imprisonment, some for twelve months, others for nine months, and a few for lesser periods. At the previous Salford quarter sessions held April 30, two others had received sentences of eighteen months' imprisonment.

In May and June, 1827, trade considerably revived, owing to a great extension of the demand for goods in the continental markets, occasioned by the low prices of almost every article of British manufacture. Mr. Robert Ogden, formerly of Lees, and several partners, erected Bank top mill, near Lees brook, in 1827. In June, 1833, Ogden and Co. employed 90 hands. From the period of its erection till subsequent to 1834, this mill contained several concerns; but since the latter date, it has been solely possessed by Messrs. Ogden, sons of the late Robert Ogden, Esq., who have considerably extended the manufactory. In 1846, Messrs. Ogden employed 500 hands, and had in operation 37,200 mules and other spindles, and 248 power-looms. Mr. Charles Bradbury, who, in 1818, was in the cotton business at Shaw factory, erected Marsland mill, Manchester street, in 1827. In June, 1833, Mr. Bradbury employed 95 hands, and the aggregate of wages which he then paid monthly was £201 14s. 2d. In 1846, Messrs. Mayall and Wiild, the present occupiers of this mill, employed 200 hands, and had in operation 23,000 mule spindles. Mr. James Holladay, millwright, erected a small mill near Royton street, in 1827, which was immediately occupied for millwright
