The Council met for the first time on the following day, Friday, the 3rd of August, and elected William Jones, Esq., Mayor. The following gentlemen were also appointed Aldermen for the different wards :--

MR. RICHARD REDFERN
MR. JOSEPH JONES JUN.
MR. WILLIAM SKELLORN

MR JAMES LEES
MR. JAMES COLLINGE
MR. ALEX TAYLOR
MR. ELKANAH MOSS

It will be seen that only two of these gentlemen - Mr. James Collinge and Mr. Elkanah Moss were selected from the Council. and vacancies being thereby caused in Mumps and Waterhead mill wards, new elections followed, when Mr. Edward Abbott Wright and Mr. Asa Lees were returned for the respective wards.

William Jones, Esq., was re-appointed Mayor at the next election, and filled the office until Nov., 1850. He was succeeded by James Collinge, Esq., who held. the office during the years 1851 and 1852. James Lees, Esq., was the third Mayor of the borough, his period
