Historical Sketches of Oldham by Edwin Butterworth

Esq., one of the gentlemen of her Majesty's Chapel Royal. Mr. Knyvett was appointed musical composer to her Majesty on her accession to the throne, and had the honour of composing the Coronation Anthem. About the year 1843 Mr. and Mrs. Knyvett, retired from public life, and they now reside at Ryde, in the Isle of Wight.

Mr. Jonathan Nield, one of the gentlemen of the Chapel Royal, was a native of Shaw edge. He was at one time a member of Lord de Grey's band, at Heaton hall, and his vocal powers having attracted the attention of that nobleman, he exerted his influence and obtained for him an appointment in the Chapel Royal, a situation which he held for a great number of years.

Mr. James Winterbottom was born in Oldham, in the year 1784, and in early life having evinced a taste for music he was placed under musical tuition. It was not long, however, before he was deprived of his instructor, but this did not abate his zeal, for he continued to prosecute his studies with much ardour and perseverance. In the year 1813 he removed to Manchester, having been engaged as choirmaster at Cannon street Chapel, but he returned to his native town in 1815, when he was appointed to a similar oflice at the Parish Church, a situation which he held for upwards of twenty years. He was well known throughout the country, his vocal abilities being held in high estimation, and he was the author of several popular psalm tunes. He died on the 9th January, 1840, and was interred at St. Peter`s. His funeral was attended by a large number
of musicians, who performed the third part of Handel's Messiah on the occasion.

Mr. William Barnes, for many years a member of the orchestra at the Concert hall, Manchester, was born at Oldham in 1792. When a mere boy he had learned to play the violin, and he made his debut at a concert at
