Middleton, whether by purchase from the Cudworths (who sold him Werneth), or in right of his marriage with Mary, sole heiress of Robert Hyde, Esq., of Denton (whose reputed relative, Edward Richardson, gentleman, possessed property in Oldham in 1681), is not clear. On the death of Sir Ralph Assheton, May 3, 1716, this and other property, situated at Greenacres-moor and elsewhere, passed to Sir Nathaniel Curzon, Bart., of Kedleston, Derbyshire, in right of his marriage with Mary, co-heiress of Sir Ralph Assheton. Sir Nathaniel Curzon, who died 1758, was father of Sir Nathaniel Curzon, who was created Lord Scarsdale, April 4, 1761, and of Assheton Curzon, Esq., M.P., who was created Lord Curzon, August 13, 1794, and Viscount Curzon, February 27, 1802. Viscount Curzon, who resided at Hagley in Staffordshire, and Penn House, in Buckinghamshire, died 1820, at the age of ninety-one, leaving a numerous family. His eldest son, Penn Assheton Curzon (who died 1797), married Sophia Charlotte, Baroness Howe (died 1835), eldest daughter of Richard, Earl Howe, the celebrated Admiral Howe. The youngest, but only surviving son of the Hon. Penn Assheton Curzon, is the Right Hon. Richard William Penn Curzon Howe, born December 9, 1796, who, after the death of his grandfather, was created Viscount Curzon and Earl Howe, July 14, 1821. His Lordship is the present proprietor of the property alluded to, and of extensive estates in the counties of Stafford, Buckingham, Leicester, &c., and chiefly resides at Gopsall Hall, near Market Bosworth.

Fog Lane contains an ancient dwelling of the Tetlows and Radcliffes. Edmund Tetlow, gentleman, second son of Richard Tetlow, of Chamber Hall, gentleman, possessed considerable property at Coldhurst, Fog-lane, Broadway-lane, &c.
