Historical Sketches of Oldham by Edwin Butterworth

Radcliffe, gentleman, son of Henry Radcliffe, gentleman, of Tonge-moor, in Chadderton, who was second son of Peter Radcliffe, Esq., of Mellor, in Derbyshire, a lineal descendant of Robert Radclyffe, Esq., of Mellor, second son of Sir John Radclyffe, of Ordsall, who died in 1442. Anne, daughter of Mr. Tetlow, died issueless, November 15, 1730, and Mr. Radclyffe married, secondly, Mary, daughter of William Walker, merchant, of Manchester. Mr. Radcliffe, died June 6, 1745, and was succeeded by his son, Edmund Radcliffe, gentleman, of Fog-lane, his only child, who married, in 1755, Sarah, eldest co-heiress of James Stringfellow, gentleman, of Whitfield in Crompton, and died, August 16, 1778. His Son, the Rev. Edmund Stringfellow Radcliffe, of Walton-le-dale, who married Frances, daughter of John Ford, Esq., of Berkhamstead Castle, in Herts, died about 1826-7, leaving several children. The Fog-lane property was sold, a few years ago, to Joseph Jones, Esq., of Hope House, Oldham; but the other estates of the family, at Broadbent and Whitfield, were recently possessed by the Rev. Richard Wilbraham Ford, of Little Risington, in Gloucestershire.

Priest Hill is said to have been the residence of a branch of the Radcliifes, of Langley. Edmund Radcliffe, gentleman, of Oldham, third son of Henry Radcliffe, Esq., of Langley, who was living in the reign of James the First, is conjectured to have married a co-heiress of George Chadderton, gentleman. Edmund's third son, the Rev. William Radcliffe, Rector of Aston and Dennington, in Yorkshire, who died in 1727, was father of William Radcliffe, Esq., who married Elizabeth, relict of John Dawson, Esq., of Milnes Bridge; and was father of William Radcliffe, Esq., of Milnes Bridge, who died in 1795, and devised his estates to Joseph Pickford, Esq., son of Joseph Pickford, Esq,. who married Mary, sister of William Radcliffe, Esq. Joseph Pickford, Esq., who had married the heiress of the Percivals, of Royton, took the name of Radcliffe, on
